Eligible Works 2019

Nominations are open for the Sir Julius Vogel Awards until the end of March. You can nominate here.

We’re heading into awards nomination season and I have a strict put-myself-out-there rule as part of overcoming the ever-looming imposter syndrome. This year I had 21 pieces accepted and 19 published as a result of submitting 205 times, as well as indie-publishing the first two novelettes in me censored city trilogy.

If you enjoyed my stories, please consider me for whatever awards you read for: Sir Julius Vogel Awards, Hugos, Nebulas etc. And, in particular, I’d love it if you take a look at these works:

Short Stories

The Fisher free to read online 1,500 words of slipstream (call it Fantasy if you need to) told in a series of related flash fiction pieces. It explores character and genre in fiction through the image of a fisher at Oriental Bay in my hometown Wellington. Published at Reading Room over at the Newsroom website.

Strands of our tomorrows free to read or listen to online 1,000 words of contemporary fantasy about immortal love and the lengths we go to cling to the past. Published at The Arcanist.

[And if you prefer sci-fi, check out this free-to-read story that was my first ever pro-rate publication: A New Cold War, 960 words at Daily Science Fiction]

Novelette

Would She Be Gone 14,800 words of science fiction. The first of an Indie-published trilogy. In the near future, the Librarian algorithm imposes tailored censorship to protect citizens from ideas that could inflict trauma or incite crime. Detective Virginia Wright heads undercover in the criminal world of spoken poetry to hunt down the source of illegal open-access e-readers. The Censored City series tells the story of a post-analog world on the tipping point of Orwellian dystopia and the women whose choices will determine which way it falls.

Best New Talent - Sir Julius Vogel Awards

Best new talent recognises excellence in new talent in any professional field within science fiction, fantasy, or horror. The nomination is for the nominee’s total body of professional work to the end of the eligible year.

2019 has been an amazing year for my short fiction and I would be honoured if you would consider nominating me for this award. You can find a list of my 2019 publications here, and see all the other bits and pieces I’ve been up to in my annual round-up.

All the other fantastic kiwi speculative fiction

If you are reading for New Zealand’s Sir Julius Vogel Awards (SJVs), please check out this spreadsheet I’ve collated with our wonderful writing community that lists as many of the eligible works we could find this year. Please add your works if they are missing!

And if you need an introduction to the SJVs, I wrote a blog post about it here.
