I’ve been meaning to make a list for a while of my stories that are free to read online that are suitable for older children/teens. Obviously, many teens will be reading everything but this list focuses on my stories without too much violence, without unhappy endings, and featuring children/coming of age. My flash fiction has featured in high school writing workshops as well but is not purposefully targeted at that age group.
For my children’s story in paid publications, see ‘A Planet Name Beatrice’ published in Young Explorer’s Adventure Guide Volume 6 and Brave New Girls: Chronicles of Misses and Machines. I also have the opening poem in Poetry for the Thoughtful Young.
My free to read stories suitable for older children include:
My award-winning epistolary climate fiction story ‘Data Migration’ published by Strange Horizons told through remote learning assignments from a teacher to a primary school child.
‘A Fairy Tale’ published by NewMyths. This is a slightly disturbing take on the Tooth Fairy so only suitable for children comfortable with a little horror, but the story itself has a happy ending.
‘Unrequited Sonata’ published by NewMyths. A coming of age story about a goblin following their dream. There is a dragon who attacks and kills some people but once again the story has a happy ending.
‘Wall or Hearth’ published by Etherea Magazine. A high fantasy story about a girl driven away by her father who finds a new home and tries to share it with him.
